When Susan R. Rose and Joan Stein started thinking about a play about motherhood, they envisioned a collection of monologues by high-profile female writers. Ms. Rose and Ms. Stein, Broadway and television producers who have been friends for 25 years, did indeed round up a sterling group of more than 15 authors.

Hartford Moms, We Salute You -- Out Loud
Hartford Stage had a different idea for its marketing campaign fior the world premiere of "Motherhood Out Loud," which begins performances Wednesday.
Instead of an illustration or a picture of the show's actors, it decided to take portraits of area moms and their kids, young and old.
